Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a women that who fears the LORD is to be praised. (Proverbs 31:30 NIV)
It would be an understatement if I said I love music. I love everything about music, I love how it can make you feel so many emotions, it can make you feel happy, sad, excited, uplifted and beautiful. My favorite genre of music is Christian music. I listen to that type of music all the time, at work, in my car, at home, if there is a radio around you can guarantee that I will be listening to christian music. I usually know all the songs that come on the radio but one day I was on my way home from work and I heard the end of a song that I had never heard before. I was really hoping that I would get to hear it again but here the whole song. The next day I was at work and I heard the song in it's entirety. The song is called " More Beautiful You" but Jonny Diaz. It is one of the most positive songs for women that i have ever heard. By the end of the song i was crying, it has such an amazing message for all women of all ages. I am not going to quote the whole song but here is the chorus:
"There could never be a more beautiful you,
Don't buy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through,
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do,
So there could never be a more beautiful you."
If you think the chorus is good you should here the whole song!
After hearing the song it got me to thinking about girls of all ages. We are all searching for our purpose in life and we would do anything to fit the image that people want. Why do we punish ourselves? We put ourselves and our bodies through all kinds or torture and it is never good enough. I have heard of girls as young as 8 years old saying that they are fat! WHAT????!!!!! That word should not even be in their vocabulary. I also know how hard it can be in high school especially being an overweight girl. High school can feel like walking into a pit of lions, you know at any minute they are going to eat you alive! In fact, I went to a fund raiser at the local high school last week and here i am a 29 year old women and I felt like it was being judged on my looks, by all these little high school girls! It was a terrible feeling! I cannot imagine being in high school in this day and age, especially with image being such a high priority. You could not pay me enough money to go back to high school today.
So here is what I have come up with, if these things are what our young girls and teenage girls are thinking about themselves then we adult women are setting a terrible example. We should be telling our young ladies, that it is not about how you look, who or what you wear, how fat, skinny, short, or tall you are, what matters is how you treat people, that is what matters. I have a tendency to get down on myself a lot because of being overweight and when my husband hears me saying negative things about myself he gets very upset. I never understood why he got so mad then he told me, it's because he hates when I say things about myself that are not true and it hurts him that I would say that. Did I mention, he is pretty wonderful! The more I think about it the more i realize that when I say negative things about myself it's like telling God, "you made a mistake when you made me." I would never say that out right but that is exactly what i am saying when I talk bad about myself. God made me the way that I am, he loves me, he thinks I am beautiful and it has to hurt him when all I do is criticize his work.
I started searching the Bible for verses that address the body image subject and there are several. If you have a few minutes I suggest looking them up; 1 Samuel 16:7, Psalm 45:11, and of course they verse that I started this post off with. These verses lay it all out, the Bible does not hold anything back, and so if you want to know what God thinks about body image, go straight to his words!
I think that there should be be more songs out there like "More Beautiful You" it is such a positive song for women. Why listen to the other junk that is out there when you can listen to music that is uplifting to your spirit and your self worth. Thank you Jonny Diaz for keeping it real for us girls!!!
I am going to leave you with my favorite verse that I discovered while researching the Bible for answers on this touchy subject, this verse sums up my blog perfectly.
"Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quite spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." (1 Peter 3:4)

Andi

Wonderful post girl!!! You are beautiful!! I just love that song. I hear it all the time on our Christian music station and it brings tears to my eyes each time. I know everyone stuggles with something.. I struggle with my skin. I have had acne since the 5th grade and the looks and comments from others (esp in jr high and high school) are very damaging. Here I am 29 (pushing 30) and still have my moments where I am ashamed of my looks because of my skin. This post (and that wonderful song) remind me of what is truly important! Thanks girl!! (PS- You couldn't pay me to do high school over again either)
Great post Andi!! You are beautiful--on the outside and inside--and yes God does not make mistakes!
I haven't known you for an extra long time, but thought the first time I met you how beautiful you are, and after getting to know you better you are only more beautiful - outside and inside!! God loves you just the way you are and so do many more of us!! Keep the faith!!!
