Last night was the season finale of Big Brother, yes I watch Big brother. In fact I am finding that I like to watch several reality TV shows, I really enjoy watching the dancing ones: So You Think You Can Dance ,and Dancing With the Stars. I also like the cooking ones: Top Chef and anything that has Chef Gordon Ramsey. There are several reality TV shows I like but there are even more that I don't like, for instance The Bachelor, and The Bachelorette. Over the summer the network that brought us these two gems also gave us a new one, a plus size version of The Bachelor, appropriately called "More to Love". My question is this: Why a separate show for plus size people? This show has a plus size bachelor and all the female contestants are plus size, beautiful women. Why do we not see these people on the normal Bachelor and Bachelorette? I will tell you why; Because according to society, plus size women should not be with average size men, they should only be with plus size men. Why else would they think that they need to make a show like this one? Not only did they make a show with only plus size women as contestants but the bachelor is a plus size man. I defy this stereotype, as i am happily married to an average size man who loves me exactly the way that I am, and he would not change a thing about me.
How can these shows call themselves "reality TV" when they don't allow real people to be contestants on whatever show they want? I have been watching Big Brother for 4 seasons now, and as much as I like the show, I have yet to see a plus size woman on that show. They have had several overweight men but not one plus size woman. There are a few reality shows that do have plus size women ,such as; Dancing With the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, and American Idol. " Idol" has had several women on their show; Jennifer Hudson, Mandisa, Melinda Doolittle, Lequisha, plus some that I know that I am leaving out. These women made it very far on that show, they have amazing talent ,and even though they did not fit the profile that everyone thought, no one could deny that they were incredible! The only thing about "Idol" is even though these women made it onto the show, and they made it pretty far, their weight was not ignored. I know on several accounts that Simon made statements that they may not make it very far based on their look. Well lets take a look at these women and their careers. Jennifer Hudson: one word, OSCAR!!!! Mandisa: major christian recording artist. Melinda Doolittle: she already was a backup singer for CeCe Winans, and now she is a solo artist and still does backup for several artists like my girl Natalie Grant!!!! Lequisha: She is a solo artist and is doing very well for herself. These women defied the stereotype and they are very successful at what they do. You go girls!
I will continue to watch my reality shows and hopefully one day these shows will realize the stereotype that they are putting off.
Reality TV-Not Reality at all!
Much love,
Andi
